Back at home, I walked into the utility room and placed the box on the side.

‘Oh, you’re back, then,’ said Linda, clearly pissed off. ‘You’ve been ages.’

‘Sorry, being a Saturday, every man and his dog were on the road and a bloody tractor – I had to follow it for miles.’

‘So, what’s in the box that’s so important?’ asked Linda.

‘Just a load of personal stuff. Nothing that couldn’t wait.’

‘As I thought. You’re not messing about with her, are you?’ Linda quizzed.

‘Whatever makes you say such a thing? Of course not.’

‘I can smell her perfume.’

‘We were standing close sorting out Stephen’s stuff.’

‘Hmm! I know what a little tart she is,’ Linda said wisely.

‘You needn’t worry, love. I’m all yours.’

‘Oh, I’m not worried, Ralph. I’m a millionaire – I’m a big catch.’

‘I’ll just change, then let’s go shopping,’ I said, giving Linda a kiss.

I dived into the shower quickly and made sure I was clean, waved a can of deodorant all over and got dressed. Doing so, I was bemoaning the fact that now two women were dictating terms to me. In one day, I’d gone from controlling everything to being controlled.

The rest of the day was spent shopping with Linda and generally fussing around her. In between being attentive to Linda, I was thinking about Amy and how the hell to get out of this predicament. I could feel the anger and tension building up inside. I needed a release.
